Coeur d'Alene man arrested for injuring 17-month-old baby

Charges for the Coeur d'Alene man being accused of felony injury to a child were upgraded to a homicide charge Monday afternoon when the prosecutor learned the 17-month-old boy had passed away.

Friday night, Coeur d'Alene Police were called to a home on North 5th St. for a 17-month-old boy who was having breathing difficulties and showed signs of head trauma. The baby was taken to Kootenai Health before being air-lifted to Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane. Medical personnel determined the baby had severe trauma to his skull and brain.

On scene, officers spoke with Joseph John Davis who was home alone with the baby. Davis is the baby's stepfather. Davis told police he had been home alone with the baby for about 20 minutes and claimed he didn't know what caused the injuries.Davis was interviewed by police and later arrested and charged with felony injury to a child.

During his court appearance on Monday, the prosecutor learned 17-month-old Maliki had passed away and said the charge will be amended to homicide. Davis' bond was set at $1 million and he was ordered to have no contact with his wife.

A GoFundMe page has been set up for the family of baby Maliki.
