Update: Late Friday afternoon, Spokane County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a report of an armed suicidal mat at the scene of a one vehicle crash. The first deputy to arrive spoke with the man and attempted to deescalate the situation. The man pulled a gun and the deputy fired, striking the man, who was later pronounced dead on the scene.
It happened around 4:30 p.m. in the 37000 block of North Sherman Road for a report of a man in a crash who appeared agitated and was armed with a gun. Responding deputies learned that the man had hit mailboxes with his vehicle, appeared intoxicated and held a gun to his head saying he wanted to kill himself.
The first deputy arrived minutes later. He tried to get the man to calm down, The man pulled the gun from his waistband and brought it up toward the deputy. The deputy fired his gun, striking the man.
The deputy requested immediate medical response and began lifesaving measures, but the man later died.
No other injuries were reported. The involved deputy was placed on leave during the investigation, which is standard policy.
The Spokane Investigative Regional Response Team responded to conduct an investigation.

Sheriff Knezovich says a preliminary investigation indicates deputies responded to a report of a suicidal person. Knezovich says the suspect ran their car off the road and a deputy tried to deescalate the situation and the suspect raised a gun and pointed it toward the deputy. The deputy fired and the suspect was hit. Knezovich.
The sheriff says the suspect died in the shooting.
Authorities are investigating a deputy-involved shooting near Sherman Rd and Findley Rd in Deer Park north of the airport.
