Post-Christmas trash could invite thieves

After you've opened, returned or regifted your presents, you may want to use some caution when throwing away the boxes.

Spokane Police say during this time of year, thieves are looking at what you've left on the curb for any clues on what Christmas gifts you unwrapped inside your home.

One of the biggest ways to prevent this is making sure your garbage can closes all the way.

Police say when boxes are overflowing from the top or sitting next to the garbage bin, that's an advertisement to invite thieves into your home.

If you do have big boxes, break them down so that they completely fit inside the bin.

Police say staying in touch with your neighbors is one of the best ways to keep your home safe.

"The main thing is is to make your home look occupied. Be involved in block watch with your neighbors that you can trust, and look out for each other because there's not enough of us to do it. If you see something suspicious please give us a call right away," said Spokane Police Lieutenant Rex Olson.
