Prolific mail thieves caught prowling in Moses Lake

Friday morning shortly before 1 am, Moses Lake Police Officers were dispatched to 2100 block of Peninsula for a report of women stealing mail. Officers responded, and quickly located two women in the area driving a car that matched the description given by the caller. When stopped, the passenger in the car began stuffing mail under her car seat. The two women, 29-year-old Jessica Steele, and 21-year-old Brittany Strong, were arrested and their vehicle was impounded and a search warrant was served on it.

Officers found 395 pieces of stolen mail from 118 separate addresses in the Moses Lake area, both inside and outside of the city limits. They also discovered heroin paraphernalia.

Steele and Strong were booked into the Grant County Jail on 23 counts of mail theft. Officers are still working to contact victims and return mail, and additional charges are expected as the investigation continues.

As we are coming into the busy time of the year for mail and package thieves, the department says they can only hope that these two will be locked up for a while so they can focus on the rest of them.
