The North Pines Middle School building is set to be demolished but before that happens members of the Spokane Valley and City fire departments and upcoming graduates from the local law enforcement academy were in the building Saturday, learning what to do in an active shooter situation.
During the drill, there were dozens of actors serving as victims, each had a variety of injuries. Sheriff's deputies and firefighters were aware of the simulated drill, but they didn't know the scenario until they got inside the building. The simulation lasted for about an hour.
During the drill there were no live weapons used. Overall, George Hedebeck, a captain of the Spokane Valley Fire Department thought today's drill went well.
