Spokane Valley man discovers dead body in yard

The Spokane County Sheriff's Office is trying to find out how long a dead body was lying on the ground in one Spokane Valley family's yard. The body was discovered around 6 p.m. Friday in the yard of a home near Harrington Avenue and Dick Road.

Ronald Shaw and his family have lived in the house for 11 years. Shaw said he and his wife were on a trip to Illinois from June 3 to June 10. Shaw told KHQ he had no idea there was a dead body in his yard until Friday night, when one of Shaw's friends came to his house to get his boat from the yard. When he walked over, Shaw's friend saw the body. Shaw called the police. He added it looked like the body was there for days and was decomposing.

"After I told the neighbors what was going on I told them I called the police, and that they'd come out because there's a body in my yard," said Shaw. "They said, 'Well we smelled the last couple, three weeks we've been smelling something, but we didn't know what it was.'"

The Spokane County Sheriff's office said the body was a male. Deputies said this is an active investigation, and the Medical Examiner's Office will release the name of the man at a later date pending positive identification and family notifications have been made.
