MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) - The West Central Montana Avalanche Center says a 29-year-old snowmobiler from St. Maries, Idaho was highmarking when he triggered the avalanche that killed him.
The family identified the victim as T.J. Grieser.
The avalanche happened Saturday near Missoula Lake in the Lolo National Forest on the Montana-Idaho border about 10 miles of Superior.
Officials with the avalanche center say Grieser was highmarking a steep chute and was making the last run of the day when the slab released. He was caught and carried an estimated 800 feet and ended up buried under 4 feet of snow.
His partners witnessed the avalanche, quickly located him with transceivers and dug him up. Grieser died of his injuries shortly after he was dug up.
