Suspected DUI Driver Injures Police Officers During Morning Commute

UPDATED PRESS RELEASE: Spokane Police Department appreciates the outpouring of care and concern for our injured police officers. It is very difficult for law enforcement officers in our community to digest that a second collision injuring on duty police officers occurred only two weeks after the last one.

On July 1, 2010, Ofc. Tyler Cordis suffered serious injuries when an impaired driver struck a telephone pole; causing that pole to land on him and pull him off his motorcycle.

Now this morning, July 16, 2010, three detectives suffered serious injuries when an impaired driver struck their patrol vehicle broadside, sending them to the hospital.

Chief Kirkpatrick visited each one in the hospital and extends her appreciation to all of you for your support.

Out of respect for the detectives and their families, we will release a very brief summary of their injuries. No other information or their names and assignments will be released today. Unless something unexpected occurs, there will not be any further information until next week. We need to allow our SPD Family to support the injured officers and provide investigators the opportunity to investigate the collision thoroughly.

The injury update as of noon today is as follows: there are plans to release the male detective who was driving the police car from the hospital, the female detective who was traveling in the front seat remains in the hospital, and the male detective who was in the back seat and most seriously injured has been admitted. All three officers suffered internal injuries and broken bones; and are obviously in a tremendous amount of pain. They are receiving great medical care and a full recovery is expected.

The Spokane Police Department's Media Relations Department is passing along cards and e-mails to the injured detectives.  To extend your support, contact Jennifer DeRuwe at jderuwe@spokanepolice.org or mail cards to "Injured Detectives" c/o Jennifer DeRuwe, Spokane Police Dept., 1100 West Mallon, Spokane, WA  99260.
