OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) - The number of Washington state government workers is slowly declining.
The state Department of Personnel says that as of Aug. 31, there were 64,548 general-government workers on the payroll, including part-time and temporary employees. That's 742 fewer than on June 30, the last day of the previous two-year budget cycle.
The numbers released Friday don't include employees at state colleges and universities.
Budget cuts are forcing state agencies to reduce their overall head count. State officials have estimated that 1,200 workers at state agencies will lose jobs because of the cuts.
