Grant County fire districts 10, 11 and 8 responded to a call of a large wildfire on the west side of State Route 243 in the town of Schawana Sunday night. The fire burned a temporary residence and three non-residential buildings. Several other homes and buildings were threatened and level 3 evacuation alerts, meaning residents should leave immediately, were issued throughout the night but have since been lifted.
Firefighters were able to stop the fire before it jumped State Route 243.
Grant County PUD linemen, the Grant County Sheriff's Office, Washington State Patrol and Washington Department of Transportation assisted firefighters throughout the night.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Grant County Fire Marshall. The Grant County Sheriff's Office reminds residents that a countywide burn ban is in effect from June 1 through September 30, annually.
